BRING A SMILE TO AN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITY - Volunteer in a Village in Ghana

Looking for low-cost volunteer opportunities abroad to experience different cultures and lend a helping hand? Come to Abetenim and help us! We are a nonprofit organization that serves underserved communities, run by arts practitioners and volunteers. At Abetenim in Ghana, we are building an arts village to provide stable places for creative people from the region and other countries to live, work, learn and create. We do this by investigating and incorporating vernacular materials and methods of construction used in the region to create structures informed by our own design aesthetics. We also do outreach to the local school and nearby village by means of community projects and education enrichment.

Volunteers are needed in all areas of rural community development: teaching at local school, water and sanitation, construction works, agriculture/farming solutions, computer literacy, sports coaching, job skills training of youths and women empowerment. If you are an arts practitioner or have an interest in the arts, you can volunteer to engage the school children or the entire community in theatre/drama production, storytelling, music, dance, puppetry, or painting a mural. Or you can come and join us in building a mud house.

COSTS: No application fee is required. Volunteers live in a guesthouse at the arts village or stay with a local family for cultural immersion. Expect to pay €60 (80 USD) per week for accommodation plus a one-time donation of €100 (140 USD) to our NGO for site development regardless of the length of your stay. Participant is responsible for cost of own meals, which can be by self catering or we have a local person to cook for you in the kitchen at the site.
